Children's Sneak Peek: Dancing Through the Decades
May 1, Thursday, 6 - 8 p.m.
Created just for children accompanied by their adult companions, Ballet Western Reserve and the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens present this special evening of dance. Children will learn basic dance steps and enjoy cupcakes and lemonade. Call Ballet Western Reserve to register at 330-744-1934.

Enchanted Evening in the Gardens: Dancing Through the Decades
May 2, Friday, 7 p.m.
Ballet Western Reserve and the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens present this enchanting evening of dance. Dancers performing to musical hits from the last 50 years will entertain guests. Hooked on Fishing: An Angler's Escape

The MetroParks Police are hosting this special event at Yellow Creek Park in Struthers. Join us for a fun-filled day of fishing, games, raffles, prizes, and more. Don't forget your fishing pole and favorite bait!

Girls' Night Out at the Gardens
May 29, Thursday, 5 - 9 p.m.
Immerse yourself in all things feminine! The Shop in the Gardens will highlight many new items from fashion accessories to garden ornaments. Don't miss the demonstrations, trunk shows, finger foods, and fun. Members will receive discounts; memberships will be available at the door. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

REOPENING

Lake Glacier and Lake Newport Boathouses will open May 3, 11:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., weekends only. Starting May 26, the boathouses will be open 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., Wednesdays - Sundays, and holidays. Pedal boats, rowboats, and kayaks are available for rental.

The Passenger Boat on Lake Glacier will resume public rides Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Noon - 6 p.m. beginning Memorial Day weekend. Private charters are available Wednesdays - Fridays by calling 330-702-3000 for reservations.



HORTICULTURE

Summer Evenings at Fellows Riverside Gardens
The D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center will be open to visitors until 8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings through August. The Cafe will be open until 7 p.m. for your enjoyment of summer evenings at the Gardens.

Flower Arranging With Marie
May 7, Wednesday, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Brighten up Mother's Day with a springtime arrangement for your table. Marie Borocz will guide you step by step in creating this colorful centerpiece in a delightfully whimsical container. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Guided Tour of Fellows Riverside Gardens
May 11, Sunday, 2 - 3:30 p.m.
Enjoy a leisurely Mother's Day walk in the Gardens to admire the vibrant hues of tulips displaying their spring colors. A guide will point out highlights while sharing anecdotes and history. Sign in at the information desk on the afternoon of the tour.

Botanical Pottery: Leaf Bowl
May 14, Wednesday, 5:30 - 8 p.m.
Lynn Cardwell, a potter whose work follows a botanical theme, will teach students to construct a bowl embossed with leaves. The pottery will be glazed, fired, and ready for pickup approximately three weeks after the class. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

At the Plant Sale: Container Gardens
May 16, Friday, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Gordon Vujevic will discuss planting and caring for unusual combinations of annuals, herbs, and vegetables. Bring a container to class. Shop with the instructor at the plant sale and return to the classroom to plant your selections. Soil will be provided and a $5 plant sale coupon will be given to each person registered. At the Plant Sale: Woody Plants

Join Gordon Vujevic on a walk through the Gardens to look at varieties of trees and shrubs that are for sale at the Plant Sale. Receive tips on planting the right tree or shrub in the right place. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register for this free program.

Succulent Dish Garden
May 21, Wednesday, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Create a stunning terracotta container of succulent plants to enjoy for many seasons. Beverly Italiano will lead you step by step in the assembly of this unusual container garden and provide instruction for its care. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Breakfast Botany: Crab Apples

Move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Calendulas in a Basket
May 3, Saturday, 1:30 - 3 p.m.
Children ages 6 and up with their adult companions will learn about edible flowers. Each child will plant a basket of calendulas to take home. Gardeners and cooks love this easy to care for plant and have chosen it as "Herb of the Year." Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Home-Schoolers: Carnivorous Plants

Home-schoolers will investigate some of the most intriguing plants on earth--carnivorous plants! Students view a brief video about this unique group of plants that have evolved to catch their food. Each child will receive a Venus flytrap to take home. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Remembering William Holmes McGuffey

William Holmes McGuffey, a heralded 19th-century educator made famous by his McGuffey Readers, spent his boyhood living on a farm in Coitsville. Walk in his footsteps as we explore nature in the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. Meet at McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. Easy rating, 1 mile.

Thanks Mom!

Saunter with us as we express appreciation for Mother Earth by taking notice of nature's diversity. Meet at the northern end of East Golf Hike/Bike Trail (off Shields Road). We'll stroll up to 1 mile on this paved and barrier-free trail.

Year of the Frog II
May 23, Friday, 9 p.m.
This year has been declared "Year of the Frog" to raise awareness about the extinction of some species of frogs. We'll participate by exploring one of the "hoppiest" places in the MetroParks. If weather conditions are right, we will hear male frogs serenading. Flashlights and boots are recommended. Meet at Vickers Nature Preserve in Ellsworth Township. Easy rating, 1 mile.

See the Sawmill Creek Preserve
May 25, Sunday, 2 p.m.
We'll hike through Austintown and Canfield Townships along the MetroParks Bikeway and explore a 150-acre woodland preserve. Conditions may be muddy. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at Kirk Road. Moderate difficulty due to length and terrain, 5 miles.

Wildflowers on Wheels

Join us for a bike ride to Western Reserve Road and back. Along the way we'll watch for late spring/early summer wildflowers. Wearing a helmet is required for participation. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at Kirk Road. Moderate difficulty, 12 miles.

Western Reserve Wildflowers

Olive Arms' Wick Avenue home, Greystone, is now known as the Arms Museum. We'll discuss her article "The Wildflowers of the Western Reserve" while strolling through the Gardens. Afterward is an optional tour of the Arms Museum (Admission: $4). Meet at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Easy rating, 1/2 mile.

Creeking in the Mill Creek Preserve

Be among the first to visit this 300-acre preserve. Biologist Roger Thoma, Ohio's crayfish expert, is our guest on this walk along a tributary of Mill Creek. We'll search for crawdads and other creek creatures. Wet and muddy conditions. Call FNC for directions and parking information. Difficult rating because of creek walking, 1 mile.

Lemonade Garden

Pet the Plant

KAYAKING
